Dunstable Town picked up another vital three points in difficult conditions with a 1-0 win against struggling FC Romania.
The game was played on a heavy pitch after recent weather conditions but both teams adapted well.
Steve O’Reilly was missing key players from the previous game in Alex Desmond (unavailable) and Jack James (injured) but Charlie Smith and JJ Kenna deputised very well.
The conditions played a part in the opening minutes as both teams tried to adapt to the surface.
Frankie Bircham had the first opportunity on goal but he shot wide on 19 minutes.
Two minutes later Kenna did well to block an effort on goal before Romania thought they had scored but were denied by a foul on Smith in the Town goal.
Harrison Mead went down in the box just before the half hour mark but the referee deemed there not to be enough contact for a penalty.
Finbar King headed wide soon after then Luka Lodder’s shot was cleared off the line with 42 minutes gone. Jamie Ovington then headed wide a cut back by Alfie Osborne just before half time.
The visitors came out for the second half with intent and caused Dunstable a few problems with several shots being blocked in succession and then shooting wide in the 58th minute.
Dunstable took the lead with a brilliant move of one touch football down the right which ended with Joe Hankins squaring the ball to Liam Hayden who slotted home to continue his goal scoring form.
Town had now settled back in to the game and continued to press forward as Bircham’s fine half volley narrowly missed the target on 76 minutes.
Lodder was put through on goal but Dren Hoti saved well with his legs a minute later then Hankins shot wide as Town searched for a second goal.
Osborne should have made the game safe in injury time but his free header went over the bar.
The Blues deservedly saw the game out and climbed to 11th in the table.
