Blues hold third place United

Dunstable Town 0-0 Biggleswade United 1st February 2020 Written by Patrick MacKay and pictures by Liam Smith.  After a late goal for Biggleswade United ensured the points were shared in November, once again there was nothing to separate the sides on Saturday afternoon, in front of a crowd of 120. High winds made for tricky conditions for both sides, and with the visitors playing with the wind behind them in the first half, it was they who had the first attempt, with Dave Parkinson curling an effort past the post from just outside the box. Further opportunities presented themselves for the visitors, with Mahmut Caglar firing narrowly over the bar twice, first with a twenty-five yard free-kick, then from open play. Town's best chance of the first half came from a move instigated by Davide Pobbe, who progressed down the left hand side before eventually delivering a cross into the middle which Joe Hankins diverted goalwards, but United goalkeeper Josh Mollison managed to get his body behind it right on the goal line. The second half saw the Blues playing with the wind behind them, and when a deep cross evaded the crowd at the near post, Jack Harvey-Bailey was only able to side-foot over the bar from close range. The chances kept coming for Dunstable, with Dan Blackman whipping in a free-kick, which was parried by Mollison into the path of Jake Kissiedu, but with the angle tight, he was only able to hit the outside of the post. With the Blues pressure building, United counter-attacked and saw a low Murphy Culkin shot saved by Dan Gould, but the ball rebounded into the path of Ryan Neufville, who couldn't keep his side-footed shot down, and saw it hit the crossbar. With twenty-five minutes left to play, Blackman hit a fierce free-kick narrowly wide of the mark. Minutes later, at the other end of the pitch, Sam McClelland, who has impressed since joining from Crawley Green earlier in the season, deflected a cross just over his own goal. Into the last ten, and both sides would have decent chances to snatch all three points. Substitute Cam Brooks found himself in plenty of space thirty yards from goal, and perhaps hoping to take advantage of the prevailing win, struck a low shot which hit the inside of the post, darted along the goalline, hit the other post and bounced away to safety. Gould was instrumental in keeping the game level, when a late corner for the away side saw an impressive double save from Charlie Clayton and then Jack Thomas. Having gained seven points from their last three games, Gareth Jackson's Blues have two away trips this week, at Harefield United on Tuesday evening, and Edgware Town on Saturday afternoon.
